Seriously. Dallas history. This will be the first year we are graced as the host city for the world renowned WOWPS and who knows when they'll come back to our city!
Poetry Slam Inc. has hosted the National Poetry Slam competition that's been going on for the past 20 years. About 10 years ago they decided to create an indie competition for individual poets, the National Poetry Slam Team competitions. The individual competitions are open to whomever but they decided to create one that was strictly for women or anyone who identified as a woman or who was non-gender conforming. This birthed the Women Of The World Poetry Slam. This will be its 10th year. Woop Woop! Because the poetry community at large was pretty much male dominated they decided it was time to have something that was strictly for women and we get to sit back and enjoy some incredible poetry from around the world.
When the competition initially started, it opened up to 72 competitors but within the past two years, they've had to extend the list up to 96 competitors. These competitors come from all over the world. 60 of these competitors are from slam certified venues who already have poetry slam organizations in the country and the other 30 are considered "storm poets" - these are poets who just pay registration and dive into a waiting list to be chosen.
In classic poetry fashion, you expect that snapping is the only way to express your appreciation for someone's piece but clapping is v much allowed, so bring your choice of applause. The finals will be held at the Majestic Theater. This is one of the historical theaters in Dallas that will ultimately give the poets a stage of honor to lay their words down. Snapping will likely be in order for such a dignified space. ;)
You will get to hear poems from women all over the world. There is a poet coming from Nigeria, some from Canada, the US of course and so much more. Additionally, there will be an array of workshops that will help guests with writing or be doing poetry as a career, and then there will also be open mics where people can truly be a part of it regardless of the competition. *Speak your heart's desire* Topics to expect: anything that deals with women empowerment; molestation, rape, domestic violence, and motivational pieces. There will be sectioned bouts for specific niche topics like "Nerd Slam", "Erotica", "Lat Ex", "Queer Open Mic" and more. Pretty much anything you can think of, they'll be covering it that week.
